Writing
In this lesson students will have an assignment that reinforces their writing skills. Students could practice writing a letter in the correct format to a pen pal. While learning how to write letters, the students would also be able to get to know other students from different places. The teacher can arrange a video conference at the end of the unit that allows the students to greet one another. The children could also create blogs to allow them to practice their writing and grammar skills. This could be an appropriate lesson for many levels, especially for grades 3-5.
Social Studies
This lesson could be paired up with the writing lesson. Once each child knows where their pen pal is from, they could use the interactive white board to label where their friend is from. Students become familiar with different states or countries. For example, the students could learn what each countries climate usually is.
Math
For this lesson students will learn about the place value. They will be given a number of apples and have to draw how many apples go each place value column. If each student could use a tablet at his or her seat, they could draw their own place value table. It allows them to construct the place value chart and learn at the same time from their seat.

The pen pal idea is good! :) Students could learn a lot from this activity. If you're going to focus on writing, you might want to think of some details : how will you access their learning outcomes ? Are you going to read all letters ? Other ideas such as "weather" or "building blogs for writing" are also good !
