Preliminary Lesson Plan

Target Audience:

The target audience for this lesson plan is 4th grade - 6th grade. For this particular lesson I will be teaching 4th grade. All types of learners can engage in this lesson.

The Big Idea:

Students will understand basic information about weather while exploring different types of weather maps.

The Overall Goal:

Students will begin describing weather and recording their ideas on the board. After the students create a working definition of weather, they will brainstorm how weather can differ from day to day (temperature, humidity, percipitation...) Students will become familiar with what meterologists do by searching for their occupation on the internet. If they come across a website that allows the child to write in to the meterologist, they will be instructed to do so. Students will also pair up and explore the internet for different types of weather maps. After they find as many as they can we will discuss what they have found as a class. Each pair or group of students will have the opportunity to draw the map on the interactive whiteboard. Students will present their map to the class and explain what their map consists of. Searching for maps on the internet will allow students to explore the internet and practice using the tools available online. The interactive whiteboard will allow students to be creative and also use technology in the classroom.
